The Good Gig Guide - September 2018

September’s pick of what’s going on in the local music scene, compiled by Gary Collins

Shine

The Royal Oak, Tunbridge Wells,
1st September

A wonderfully tight function band that gig extensively throughout London and the South East, Shine are a five-piece outfit that play jazz/funk covers to a very high standard. Earning their living from touring on the busy wedding circuit they take time out to play now and then to the public and have played at many high-profile venues such as the Roadhouse in Covent Garden, the Kensington Roof Gardens and the Walkout bars.

Space

The Forum, Tunbridge Wells,
15th September

Formed in Liverpool in 1993, I’ve always found this band difficult to define, certainly in terms of which genre they sit in. The music press describes them as “alternative rock, alternative dance, electronica, alternative hip hop, neo-psychedelia”. See what I mean? Thankfully, a quick visit to YouTube will help you to reach your own verdict on the matter.

Lipstick & Beatniks

The Grey Lady, Tunbridge Wells,
22nd September

Based in East Sussex, this is another multi-genre mix-up of blues, rockabilly, soul, Latin and jazz. A bunch of very talented musicians who have come together to form their very own individual sound, they will even convert to a nine-piece when playing the latter and occasionally to an acoustic duo when playing smaller venues.

• Call the venue on 01892 544700.
