The Mount Edgcumbe: A Haven In The Centre Of Tunbridge Wells
Tucked away on the historic common offering sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of the centre of Tunbridge Wells is the Mount Edgcumbe. Their website’s tagline is ‘the heart of the country in the heart of the town’ and its setting really does make you believe you have been transported away from the busy pace of the shops.
I visited on a Saturday just before Christmas, and the pub was filled with people enjoying family get-togethers or meeting friends for a catch up.
The venue is warm and welcoming with much character – exposed brick walls, beams and even a quirky sandstone cave area! And the staff were just as welcoming and very attentive – ready to help with your every need.
The British-European Gastro-pub menu changes seasonally and features local produce – and this was clear from the fresh and tasty dishes served. I started with the pumpkin and butternut squash soup that came with rustic breads, while my partner tried the home-made sausage rolls, which went down a treat.
For the main I chose the Edgcumbe fish pie with broccoli and topped with a deliciously creamy Cheddar mash, while my partner made the most of the upcoming festivities having the turkey roast with all the trimmings and a generous jug of gravy.
Desserts range from affogato and chocolate orange cheesecake to ice cream and cheeses – something for everyone!
When it comes to drinks the family-run pub also support locals, sourcing guest beers from breweries all over the Kent and Sussex area. However, you may also want to pop in to try the refreshing Inedit Damm (which makes a perfect alternative to wine with dinner) created by globally-acclaimed chef Ferran Adria – this is one of only three pubs in the South East (Kent and Sussex area) serving it!
And if you don’t want your experience to end, why not stay the night in one of their six luxury boutique bedrooms and enjoy a hearty breakfast in the morning?
