Beating Winter Skin Woes
How a little TLC and planning ahead can help beat the winter skin blues.
Cold winter weather – whether you’re indoors or out – can be harsh on your skin and lips. A little extra TLC and being prepared can help keep your skin happy, healthy and glowing!
Dry skin Cool air, low humidity, cold winds and moving from warm central heating into the cold and back again can significantly dehydrate our skin. The main issue in winter is skin dehydration or lack of water. This is different to skin dryness, which refers to skin that lacks lipids or oil. Dehydration is when there is a lack of water in the stratum corneum or outer layer of the skin. It can result in anything from sensitive skin and red cracked lips to rough, dry and flaky skin. From dry or oily to combination or sensitive, there are plenty of products on the market suited to your particular skin type. Ask your local pharmacist or at the cosmetics counter for advice.
Chapped lips Your lips are particularly susceptible to harsh winter conditions because unlike the rest of your facial skin, they lack the oil-producing glands that could help keep them moist. If your lips peel or become chapped, invest in a good lip balm and apply it often! Opt for one that contains ingredients that seal moisture in the lips, such as beeswax or shea butter.
