Preserving the past for the future
In early 2018 Sevenoaks Town Council (STC) secured a Heritage Lottery Fund grant towards restoring Bat & Ball Station in Sevenoaks. The Victorian building, constructed in 1862, had been boarded up since 1991 and gradually deteriorated. In March this year, after an eight-month restoration, STC were proud to open this local heritage landmark for everyone to enjoy. The station now offers a cafe, open six days a week, and two community rooms for hire. A ‘Victorian Garden’ area is being designed and STC are looking for volunteers to help maintain it.

Flower first for local nursery

Salvia Amante, a stunning fuchsia-red salvia, developed by the originator of the ever-popular Salvia Amistad, is set to be launched by Dyson’s Salvias at the RHS Hampton Court Flower Show on 1st July.  The plant, introduced by New World Plants, is a genetic breakthrough – all of the subsequent hybrids of Amistad have appeared in bluish purple form, so to obtain a red is being heralded as a plant first. Rod Richards from new World Plants says: “Amante [meaning lover in Spanish] is a friend of Amistad and enjoys the same habit etc, but its uniqueness lies in its fuchsia red colour. We are so pleased that William Dyson is going to launch it for our breeder at Hampton Court.”

William Dyson, a salvia expert with more than 200 different species in his collection, took possession of the plants a couple of months ago at his nursery at Great Comp Garden, near Sevenoaks. He has since brought on 100’s of plants to showcase and sell at Hampton Court and the plan is to also share them at Great Comp Garden’s Summer Show on 10th and 11th August.
