Riders Brave the Elements for the 5th Canterbury Bike Ride
Despite the wet and windy weather conditions cyclists turned out in force for the fifth annual Canterbury Bike Ride, championed by Redrow Homes. Starting out from Canterbury Rugby Club riders completed either the 25 or 50-mile route, with the 80-mile riders switched into the 50-mile ride due to the weather.
Started by Canterbury Hellfire players and the indomitable Brian Pitchford, this non-competitive sportive visited many villages and towns in East Kent with the 50-mile riders visiting the SAGA Pavilion in Folkestone for a fuel stop and the 25-milers calling in at Bike Tart at Barham.
This year’s event continued to keep its strong links with local charities and raised in the region of £500 for Canterbury Hellfire Wheelchair Rugby Club. Over 15 local businesses are involved, including Redrow Homes, Barretts, Bang & Olufsen, Shepherd Neame, The Canterbury INDEX magazine, Lenleys, Dynamix and Kent College.
The ride was managed by Iconic Cycling Events, who specialise in designing, developing and delivering high quality, professionally-managed cycling events in the UK and overseas.
The ride will return to Canterbury for 2019. Their other events include: Bike Bath, Bike Oxford, Bike Chester, and the Carter Jonas LandAid Pedalthon.
